Halcyon’s First Veteran Workforce Development Class Graduates

Halcyon Solutions, an IT Solutions company based in Columbus, Ohio, recently launched its non-profit “Veterans Workforce Development Program”. This program was initiated to address the fact that veterans in the United States are the most under-served community in the area of workforce development. While the focus of many Veteran Agencies at the federal, state and local level has been to provide good medical care and benefits, the process of assimilating them into the civilian workforce as self-sufficient, working professionals has been largely lacking.

Among the problems cited by veterans groups is that the skills a service member acquires in the military do not always transfer to the civilian world. What’s missing, they said, is often a system of certification that tells an employer that the veteran has the skills and knowledge to meet the job requirements. The absence of training opportunities continues to hamper the veterans in transitioning smoothly to the civilian workforce.

Halcyon Solutions took the initiative to address this critical gap by launching this program. By combining our technical expertise with training and resource development, our goal is to equip veterans with the necessary skills so they can become productive and successful IT professionals with Fortune 1000 companies.

The program seeks to provide on the job classroom based IT training to qualified veterans and work with local corporations to find them entry level IT employment opportunities. The first batch of trained veterans graduated in Spring 2012 and met with prospective employers including State of Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities and several Central Ohio-based Fortune 500 companies. Most of the veterans have found IT employment opportunities that will hopefully translate into a career in information technology.

“The United States is my adopted country and I have lived here for more than 32 years,” said Mohan Viddam, Chairman and CEO of Halcyon Solutions. “I have been fortunate enough to get excellent education and career opportunities in the US. Ever since I started my own business, I have always wanted to give back to the country that is the land of opportunity for so many people. What better way to do that than to help our veterans who have served this country. I am excited and gratified to see the response from many local corporations, especially the Department of Development Disabilities and IGS Energy, that have collaborated with Halcyon Solutions to help our veterans become successfully employed and pursuing a career in the growing IT industry. Halcyon is committed to growing this program in the coming months.”

Local organizations have received this program with enthusiasm. According to Bryant K. Young, CIO of Ohio Department of Development Disabilities, “Our nation is indebted to veterans who quite often put their lives on the line in order to serve our country. Their transition to the civilian workforce can be daunting and challenging especially in tough economic times. Halcyon Solutions has stepped up and utilized their IT expertise to help train veterans who are interested in pursuing IT careers. We at the Department of Developmental Disabilities are happy to offer opportunities where the veterans can utilize their skills and continue to grow and enhance their knowledge of IT, especially in the area of Software Quality Assurance. By partnering with Halcyon in this program, we hope to help more veterans go through this transition in the future.”

Class graduate Wayne Ellyson is excited about his recent position at Ohio Department of Development Disabilities and commented “Due to layoffs and downsizing, I found myself stuck in a dead end job, with no opportunity for advancement or personal/professional growth. I had a bachelor’s degree, but I was lacking the current IT skills that were necessary to find anything other than a technical support position. The Halcyon program provided relevant, hands-on training and experience. They also refined my resume and interview skills. They then used their business contacts to match me with several corporate decision makers, which ultimately led to an exciting career opportunity. I highly recommend this program to any veteran who is looking for a career in IT. Mohan and everyone at Halcyon went out of their way to help us succeed.”

Jim Baich, CIO of IGS Energy, Dublin has supported this program from the beginning. “IGS Energy has a long-standing commitment to assist veterans in all aspects of their transition from the military into the civilian world,” said Jim. “We have several programs with the goal of assisting veterans. We are excited to see a company such as Halcyon invest their resources in recruiting and training veterans with IT and job-search skills. At IGS, we have brought on a veteran who graduated through this program and are seeing the fruits of this training. He has taken extraordinary initiative to work closely with our development team to employ test automation strategies across a variety of systems. We will continue to offer more opportunities to veterans who can become productive members of our software development teams. We hope to see more companies join this valuable program.”

Continuing on the success of the first batch, preparations have started for the summer 2012 session. Local area corporations have expressed a strong interest in participating in this program and Halcyon Solutions continues to engage with area corporations to foster long-term partnerships that benefit and support this program. Companies and state agencies are encouraged to contact Halcyon to learn more about opportunities to participate in this risk-free program that seeks to help veterans.
